An End for a New Beginning Part 1: The Psychology Behind Fashion and the Truths of Beauty and Self-Worth

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a fantastic, relaxing summer. I definitely am! I don't think I've had this much freedom from responsibilities since middle school. Simply said, I'm totally enjoying it. I move into my dorm in 6 weeks, so I've still got some time to be lax. It's funny because I'm realizing how lazy and relaxed I can be when I want to be hehe. I like that I'm literally just chilling out for once. On the contrary though, many of my friends are beginning school as soon as next week. We'll soon be swamped back into our academic and social circles which is both stressful and exciting. And speaking of this upcoming school year, I have very important, bittersweet news to share with you all.

Alas...here it is. Acknowledging that I'll be very busy transitioning into a new chapter of my life and Diana going abroad in a few months, we have decided that it is best to stop doing Letrendary once my summer break ends. As much as we love pouring our hearts into this blog, we don't think we'd be able to deliver posts on a normal basis when we aren't together. Since the next few posts will be our last, we are making it a series called An End for a New Beginning. Here's Part 1. Enjoy!

For today's post, I feel inspired to be more personal with you guys about my recent thoughts on style, fashion, confidence, and self-worth. Since we began Letrendary, my personal style as well as my mentality toward fashion has continued to change and grow. Even more importantly, I've seen my confidence and self-worth both strengthen and weaken in many ways. It has been a journey to say the least, and I want to open up so you can see more of who I am behind the outfits and pictures you're used to seeing here.
So to begin, I'll just discuss how my personal style has subtly evolved. I used to really like preppy and delicate clothing, but now I'd much rather opt for something that's comfortable and casual. In the past, I would have worn skirts and blouses like the one that's pictured here on the daily. The next two outfits you'll see in this post are more representative of my style though. They are much more simple and casual...maybe even unfashionable to some of you. I usually wouldn't showcase such simple outfits like those because they aren't really anything special, but I think it's important to be honest about my style with you guys. I want to be honest so you know that I am not as much of the girly-girl that I used to be. I want to be honest so you know that the world 'fashionable' has a very flexible definition and it is ultimately defined by you! While I still love dresses and skirts, I do think my style is becoming more urban, simple, and comfortable.
The next thing I want to talk about is what I DO NOT like about fashion.

While fashion is inspiring and amazing because it reflects culture, personality, and creativity, it can also be distracting because it is so materialistic. I've had to draw the line for how much I value fashion. It has personally been an important challenge of mine not be so attached to my clothing because it's just material. This may sound dumb to many of you if you aren't attached at all to your clothes, but for me, it's been a challenge.

As a fashion blogger, I think it's important for me to say this because people in the fashion industry will usually only talk about the positives of clothing and fashion...but there are serious negatives that are actually much more psychological.
I really despise how materialistic fashion can be. People take so much pride in flaunting their pricey outfits and brand-named items. I admit that I am a victim of this. I like brand-named things because it makes me feel wealthier and it boosts my confidence. When I see a mediocre-designed dress and then see that it has a designer's name on it, I automatically become five times more appealed to it. Actually writing out the psychological thoughts and emotions I get from fashion is so odd. I feel like a total idiot writing this out...but IT IS SO TRUE! It is nearly despicable how much people can base their confidence and self-worth on how expensive their bag is or how many new clothes they wear each week. THIS is the part of fashion that I have been trying so hard to stay away from. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad to own designer-brand handbags or buy new clothes because I do too. It is, however, unhealthy to see how addicted people can be to materialism. Even more, it's discouraging to see how people consider themselves better than others because they have things that other people cannot afford and would be jealous about. I don't believe in measuring beauty in money, and I have to constantly remind myself of that. Especially being in Southern California of all places, it can be easy to forget.
As you probably know, I love layering simple jewelry.

So speaking of beauty, the last thing I want to share with you guys is about confidence and self-worth. Fashion can be both a real booster and a downer when it comes to confidence and self-worth. I honestly can't even count that times it's been a downer for me. Quite often, I look at myself in the mirror and tell myself, "This makes me look fat," "I can't pull this off," "I need to lose weight." I've been telling myself these things as long as I can remember, and all I can say is that it has gotten progressively worse as I've grown up. Why? Well, all we see on social media are body goals, outfit goals, and relationship goals, etc. GOALS, GOALS, GOALS. It's not wrong to admire others, but it's more about the psychological consequences that occur when people measure their self-worth on what society defines as beautiful and perfect.
All this to say, I know I'm not the only one who has self-image issues--nearly all women do and most men do too. It's a part of us. I hope you know that you're not the only one that sometimes doesn't like what you see in the mirror. I hope you know that you don't need to be ashamed of that fact that you aren't happy with yourself all the time. All of us already know that we should base our beauty on who we are on the inside. I don't need to tell you that. That's actually what we always hear.  Things like ,"all that matters is how beautiful you are on the inside." It's completely true and it's reassuring, but I always put myself down again after I hear that. And it's because we never really hear that it's totally normal to be unhappy with the way you look and that radiating the best in you takes a LOT of time, effort, and healing. It's also because we don't realize that there are actually solutions to boosting our confidence in which case we're stuck in our own dissatisfaction. Empowerment is a challenge for every individual. I'm still working on it!
Sooo I'm still going to end this on a couple of cliché but fundamental truths. First and foremost, the foundation of beauty is who we are inside. That will always outshine your outward appearance no matter how much media counters that fact. Second, I still believe that fashion is more empowering than hurtful. If you wear clothes that you're comfortable in, it'll naturally make you more confident. Third, materialistic things can never ever replace the value and power of relationships. In other words, your relationships with your family, your friends, and your community is so much more fulfilling and meaningful than things like clothes or cars. Don't ever forget that! And in conjunction with this point, our beauty shines brightest when we understand and live out that principle. Showing love, grace, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness is the most basic yet maybe the most challenging solution to boosting our confidence and self-worth.

In the next post, I'll be sharing the things I have been doing to see and show the best in me! What's amazing is that we don't even know the fullest extent of who we are. It's miraculous how much we can learn about ourselves as we grow up.

Thanks so much for reading and I hope this post in some ways has got you thinking or was encouraging. Make sure to comment or email us if you have any questions, requests, or ideas for the final series.

Keep shining!

febYOURary's Must-Have Staples

Happy February everyone! Sorry we didn't have a post last Thursday like I said we would (sad face). Hopefully the content from this post makes up for it. I thought it might be helpful to give a suggestion about what you might want to think about wearing this month and/or what you might want to buy if you have some cash to spend. It's supposed to be very rainy and cold this month, so here are 3 must-have staples for the California cold!
1. Plain Wool Cardigan
This cardigan is very warm because it's real wool. I don't own very many cardigans or jackets, but the ones I have are good quality...and that's all that matters! Black is always a smart choice in the winter because it nearly matches everything, and I personally enjoy wearing darker colors when it's cold.

Tip: Have a summer collared tank top that's sitting in your closet? Button up your cardigan all the way and...voila, it's a collared top!!! See how it looks like a peter pan collared top on the bottom right? It's so easy, simple, and clean.

Black Cardigan: Polo Ralph Lauren
2. Textured Long Cardigan
I love this cardigan because it's very fuzzy and warm. It has a hipster, relaxed look, which I really like about it. It's also a beige-tan color, which makes it very easy to match.

Tip: Wear a long cardigan with a pair of boyfriend jeans and your outfit will look effortlessly put together!
How cute are the button and pockets?!? I bought this cardigan on sale and I've used it very well. It goes really well with a pair of brown booties I own.

Cardigan: Abercrombie // Patterned Blouse: Nordstrom
 3. Wool Coat
(Photo creds: Abby Lozares & Kaleb Oh)
I bought this coat on sale from Zara and it was still pricy but well worth-it! I love the subtle pink more than anything. I had only owned one coat until I got this a few weeks ago, so it's an exciting addition to my winter closet. If you feel like it's too late in the game to buy a coat, don't feel so hesitant. Better to buy now than never!

Tip: A coat speaks for itself. It's what makes dressing up for the winter more simple in certain ways. A scarf like the one above is more than sufficient.

 Light Pink Coat: Zara
I was up in Big Bear two weeks ago, and there was so much snow! Most of these pictures were taken in 20-30 degrees weather, so I was literally freezing. There should be a lot more rain and snow on its way because El Nino is just warming up. Brrrr! If there's anything specific you'd like to see, shoot us an email or leave us a comment on Instagram or Tumblr @Letrendary!

Ocean Waves & Boho Craze: Guest Post by Raven

Aloha, everyone! Today we are lucky enough to welcome someone who is not only outwardly beautiful but also harbors a beautiful heart and soul: the absolutely wonderful Raven. As founder of the Ocean Lovers' Society on campus, Raven has never ceased to amaze me with her passion and love for the ocean. But the girl has a rocking style, too, and she's kind enough to shed some light on her closet choices in this post. So, Raven, take it away!

Our planet is a delicate, beautiful, and precious place. In a time such as this, one of the most important things we must keep in mind is our impact on the health of our home. A place that I like to focus on protecting is our oceans. The truth is, our ocean is the primary source of life on the planet. Not only does it provide food, materials, and other natural resources but most of the oxygen we breathe. To neglect a place so vital to our life on earth will cause us face huge consequences in our future.

I do my best to incorporate my passions into my everyday life, and especially into my wardrobe. I believe that your style is the best way to express your interests. The way you present yourself through your clothing says a lot about you, and gives you a great opportunity to communicate what you’re passionate about to the world around you. I love the freedom fashion gives me that allows me to (quite literally) wear my heart on my sleeve. Inspired by a combination of bohemian and surfer style, I try to balance my wardrobe between a fun and comfortable look while also maintaining a whimsical aura. When you think of what a mermaid would wear if she were to live on land, your visuals are most likely parallel to my favorite looks. Not only does it reflect the mood of the sea but also my own personality. I try to project a sense of tranquility but also neatness when putting an outfit together.

All while paying attention to the “mood” of style, I tend to be drawn to rich colors. In the photo above, I have am wearing a rich red crop top with threads that weave in a variety of beautiful bright colors. The piece is composed of 100% organic cotton. Just as I believe it is important to pay attention to the materials that enter your body and its effect on you and your environment, it is just as important to be aware of the materials that you place onto your body. The textiles used to create the clothes we were could have either a negative or positive effect on the earth, so it is very important to refrain from non-sustainable material. However, I think we can all agree that with many mass production clothing companies thriving on sales reaching millions it is difficult to find clothing following these guidelines. My hope for the future is that we are able to find sustainable material like organic cotton and hemp as a more common textile in clothing stores.

Life is better in a bikini! The outfit above is one of my favorites, featuring loose boyfriend jeans and my favorite cardigan by Billabong. This is a look that is perfect for an evening by the water, providing comfort and warmth. I’ve also chosen a black bikini top to add to the comfort and color foundation to allow the colors in my jewelry and cardigan to pop. I’ve accessorized this look with earrings made from recycled threads and turquoise as well as a body chain with turquoise stones as well. I like to play around with jewelry in my everyday fashion and find myself wearing some pretty extravagant pieces. Incorporating the fun with jewelry inspired by bohemian style into a more laid back surfer style is what I usually go for in a casual outfit. I especially love jewelry that comes from natural material. Some that I own are made from starfish, sea shells, coffee beans, and roots.

I think the ultimate victory in fashion is gaining a sense of self. As you grow to become more aware of who you are, your style is going to change as your interests shift. What a beautiful thing to know that you are so free to express! When you find something you love, expressing it through the way you dress can be one of the most entertaining and flexible ways to do it. Let the colors you love so much speak through your apparel. I love to translate the sapphire blue of a calm ocean sunset through stones from the earth of that color and express the soft flow of each wave with a white fringed dress. Keeping an eye open to how your actions on all scales affect the planet we live on is so important. Wouldn’t you love to enjoy a stunning blue ocean without excess oil and trash? Appreciate the world around you, and protect it.

En Summer Moda

COMFY, CASUAL, AND CUTE

I think you'd only get this posts's title pun if you've taken Spanish 3. But basically... en=In and moda=fashion in Spanish...so In Summer Mode-ah. Haha get it? Yea? No? Okay. Anyways...TWO POSTS IN ONE DAY?! Heck yea! Diana and I thought we definitely needed to do two posts to make up for our long absence. This post isn't culturally themed, but hopefully you enjoy the different summer looks! Enjoy!
Top: Michael Stars // Shorts: Nectar Clothing

The drapey soft shorts have been trending like crazy since last summer. I think so many people love them because they're so comfy and fun to wear at the same time. I bought these because I loved the floral pattern on them. I think the pom-poms also add a nice touch to the shorts. I don't wear these often, but when I do, I like to pair them with a very simple top so that the outfit is focused on the shorts. I chose a light mint colored top because it nicely complemented the light pink color of the shorts!

STRIPES ON STRIPES: BLUE & WHITE

I love sophisticated outfits, so this is by far my favorite of the three. I also love matching and color coordinating quite obviously. For this outfit, it worked to put the stripes on stripes because they were the similar shades of blue, and the stripes went in different directions. The top stripes are horizontal, while the bottom stripes are vertical. If they were in the same direction, the outfit would probably have looked weird. White and blue are one of my favorite color combinations. You should test it out!
Blazer: Nordstrom // Stripe Tank Top: Velvet // Striped Shorts: Abercrombie // Bag: Kate Spade // Espadrilles: Soludos

THE DENIM SKIRT

Top: Guess // Denim Skirt: American Eagle // Sandals: Sam Edelman

I really love this skirt in particular because it's a little ripped and it's a cream color. It paired it with a striped green top and black sandals. It isn't a comfortable outfit, so I only wear the skirt when I feel like putting in effort. It is a great staple to have! This skirt was on sale, so I thought why not. The key to dressing fashionably is having a bunch of staples. Easy staples to have are solid colored tops, chambray tops, denim jackets, colored jeans, etc. Thanks for reading today, and thanks Diana for all the awesome pics! Check us out on Instagram or Tumblr @Letrendary for more pictures!
