A Promantic Walk Through the Woods: Prom 2016

PROM 2016

Hey everyone! I am bubbling with excitement to share this post with you because...prom and dresses and beautiful people and big smiles and AHHH!!! I had an IB exam every day last week, so I really appreciated the time I had to take my mind off of studying and be worry-free! I really hope you love this post!
Nancy wore a beaded-bodice, taffeta gown by Adrianna Papell and she got it at Nordstrom! The beads and flowers were hand-sown onto the bodice. Nancy describes her style to be classic, classy, and east-coast chic. I absolutely loved her dress because it's simple and elegant but still spiced up with the detailed work in the beading.
Winnie bought her dress at Group USA! It is emerald green with embellishments aligned on the edges of the cutouts. She wears it with huge SLYTHERIN pride! Cut-out dresses have especially been in style since last year. The color was so perfect for the occasion!
Christine wore a dress by Tadashi Shoji! For those of you not familiar with Tadashi, he is a well-known designer in the fashion world. Her dress is actually her mom's from when she was in college, which makes it all the more special and sentimental.

Erinna bought her dress at Nordstrom. She loves wearing light pink and was looking for a dress with a high neckline that was lightweight. This dress obviously met her criteria.
Tabitha got her dress at David's Bridal. The elegant floral beading on the side is what Tabitha loves the most about the dress. She also wore a simple diamond necklace to add to the dress. As I say, you can never go wrong with a simple black dress!
My dress is by Adrianna Papell and is made of tulle and chiffon. On the dress are flower petals, which really made me gravitate towards this dress. I also love color-block dresses, so this dress was a must for me. Also, you can never go wrong with black and white--it's timeless! I decided to paint my nails, which is rare since I play piano. I went with burgundy red as a contrast to the black and white.

Andrea's dress is from Roxy's Bridal in Montclair. Andrea describes her style to be simple and elegant. She said the dress was very comfortable throughout the night, which is an absolute plus! As Andrea eloquently puts, "Comfort first, diamonds second."  Also, I must add that I am in LOVE with her corsage. The white and gold accents of the orchid go perfectly with her dress.

Beside the fashion, prom was a wonderful experience and I'm glad I can finally check it off my list of exciting events before graduation! Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this post possible, especially the brilliant Diana Chao for coming out and photographing us!

HC 2015: Last Time Coming Home?

Last week was a high-intensive week of school, so homecoming was a huge relief. I'm stuck between two thoughts when it comes to school dances. Let's be honest...I don't particularly love being in a gym full of teenagers high on hormones and adrenaline, but I really do enjoy these opportunities to dress up, go out, and dance, since it isn't something I do often. I thought it would be nice to share what my friends and I wore to Homecoming for today's post. I say it again later in the post, but this was actually NOT the dress I was planning on wearing.

I researched a little bit about the history of Homecoming, and I was surprised that it's historically more about the football game and the parade than the dance itself. It's totally the other way around now (Dance>HC Game). The Homecoming tradition officially began in 1910, so this is its 105th anniversary!

I bought this dress THREE hours before the dance!! I had ordered 2 dresses a week before and they were expected to come Saturday morning, but of course...they didn't. Thanks to my mom, we ran out the door and were able to find this in less than an hour.

Although I am upset that the dresses I had planned to choose from did not arrive, I'm still very happy with this dress that I found. It looks purple in the pictures, but it's actually navy blue fabric with purple flowers. It was a basically tea length dress on me (because I'm short), which made it look even more elegant.
DRESS: Eliza J Floral Metallic Jacquard Fit & Flare (Nordstrom)
SHOES: Bally
I chose to wear these black pointed heels that I normally wear for Mock Trial competitions (They're actually my mom's). They matched perfectly with the chic/classy look that I was going for.
Tabitha wore gold accents to go with her purple metallic bodycon. I really liked how she wore dainty, delicate jewelry rather than putting on something chunky. I know I can't pull off a bodycon, but she can!!

How cute is Diana?! Props to Tabitha for doing the cool knot hairstyle on the back (all those YouTube vids are paying off for her). Diana wore a pink strapless floral dress and wore a bejeweled strawberry necklace to complement the dress.

(Note: The following pictures were taken with an iPhone   -Diana)

If you went to Homecoming, I hope you had lots of fun!! I will say that the music was significantly better than the music from the dances I'd gone to (shoutout to Rachel, most fab ASB Secretary and pictured above)! Thanks to DChao and Tabitha for making this post possible! Have a wonderful week, everyone.

TFIOS: The Fascimile in Our Styles

Hello world! I'm sorry it's been a little infinity since my last post. If you're a high school student, I think you'd agree with me that May is the most academically rigorous month of the school year. However, Diana and I are back today! We have a lot of awesome ideas for the summer, so we hope that you'll keep checking into our blog. This post is literature and movie inspired by The Fault In Our Stars! It is pretty likely that you might have read the book, and if you haven't already, I'm assuming that you aren't planning to at this point. Therefore, I won't give a whole synopsis of what the book is about. Instead, I'm going to be sharing my favorite quotes from the book! Also, today's title pun has the word facsimile because...YES. I have the same dress that Shailene Woodley wore in TFIOS! (Facsimile means an exact copy...except I didn't copy her. I had it before the movie came out!)

LBD: Little Black Dress

I read The Fault In Our Stars during my freshman year, around the time it was becoming very popular. I watched the movie a whole month after it came out because I had been out in D.C. when the movie was released. I remember sitting in the plane to D.C. and seeing the woman next to me silently shed tears while reading the last few pages.

I had gone to watch the movie with one of my close friends, and I remember watching the movie and freaking out when I saw Hazel Grace wearing the SAME EXACT DRESS that I owned to Gus's funeral. (Sorry, spoiler!) I obviously had never owned something that an actress wore in a movie, so it was a very, very exciting moment.

Here's my favorite quote from the entire movie:

Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.

I bought this dress at Nordstrom a year and a half ago. I've worn it countless time for different piano competitions. It is classy and simple, which is what I love about it.

A tip for anyone: If you don't know what color dress to wear, just go with black! It is arguably the best color for classy events, and it is easier to hide stains!

Above is a picture of Hazel Grace and Isaac after Gus's funeral. This was the only picture I could find of Hazel wearing the dress. If you watch the movie, you'll be able to see it better.
"As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once."

Shoes: Aldo

I think the greatest perk of wearing black is that it allows you can match it with any color. It isn't really possible with any other color.

“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”

“Oh, I wouldn't mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you."

Sorry for all the sappy quotes, but the quotes are one of the reasons why so many teenagers love it. Let's be honest, sad love stories can be tragically magical. The plot of this book is so impractical, yet John Green's style of writing is so down to earth that it just makes the reader believe in every word wholeheartedly. I think TFIOS is one of those books that you absolutely love once you've finishing reading it. However, I think your impression of the overall book isn't as great after some time. At least that's the way it was for me. I'd strongly suggest that you read Papertowns, another one of John Green's books, if you haven't already. It is a fun read, and the movie is coming out in July!
